Expedition Radio

The Rocky Talkie Expedition Radio is our powerful 5-watt GMRS radio, featuring extended range, multi-day battery life, and full waterproof protection. Hand-tested to IP67 standards, the radio withstands 1 meter of submersion and features a water-shedding design for quick, clear communication—even in whitewater. This radio is fully compatible with our award-winning FRS Mountain Radio. Built and tested in the Colorado Rockies, the Expedition Radio is constructed with a protective rubber padding and a shatterproof LED screen for enhanced durabilty. A specialized 1800 mAh battery delivers 4–6 days of use on a single charge, even in frigid conditions (-20°F). With 5 watts of output—the highest allowed for handheld GMRS radios—it offers a max range of over 35 miles, with 2–8 miles more typical in backcountry terrain. For more info on range, please see our range testing video. Each radio comes ready to use with a compact 7.5 cm antenna installed, plus an included 17 cm antenna to moderately enhance range and weather channel reception. Additional features include dual-channel monitoring, access to NOAA weather alerts, and 8 GMRS repeater channels for extended transmission. Replacement Battery for Mountain Radio

The Mountain Radio uses a specialized, cold-resistant lithium-ion battery built for reliable performance in alpine conditions. This 1550 mAh battery provides 3-5 days of use and up to 130 hours of standby time on a single charge. Batteries come included with each radio, and this replacement ensures your Mountain Radio stays powered for extended adventure. The battery charges via USB-C charging.

17cm Antenna Replacement for 5 Watt Radio

Please note: as of June 7th, 2024, this antenna is now included in the box along with every 5 Watt Radio.This flexible long antenna can be swapped onto the 5 Watt Radio. It can extend your range (by roughly 10-20% depending on the environment) and also boost your reception of NOAA weather channels. The 5 Watt Radio maintains the full IP67 waterproof rating with the 17cm Antenna attached.

Replacement Battery for 5 Watt Radio

The 5 Watt Radio uses a specialized lithium-ion, cold-resistant battery. The capacity is 1800 mAh and standby battery life is around 150 hours of standby time. Batteries come included with the radio, this is a spare battery that can be used to keep the radio running on long trips without needing to recharge. Each radio is hand-tested to IP67 waterproofing standards (1 meter submersion) and includes a water-shedding design for quick communication in white-water.The 5 Watt Radio maximizes two critical aspects of a backcountry radio: range and battery life. The radio transmits the highest GMRS power (5-watts) permitted under FCC regulations. The max range is over 35 miles, however, 2 to 8 miles is typical in backcountry terrain. The radio includes a specialized 1800 mAH battery that achieves around 4 to 6 days on a single charge, even in frigid conditions down to -20°F.Easily attach the 5 Watt to packs and other gear using the integrated steel gator clip (with 360-degree rotation) and backup leash. USB Power Adapter

This power adapter is compatible with both the Mountain Radio and the 5 Watt Radio. This product is only the AC wall adapter block and does not include a cable. It has a USB-A port, outputs 5 Volts with 2 Amps and accepts 110V and 220V. All radios include a UBS-A to USB-C charging cable that is compatible with this adapter. Rocky Talkie radios no longer include a charging adapter as part of our 2024 sustainability initiatives. You can purchase this adapter or use other 3rd party adapters such as phone or laptop chargers, power banks, solar chargers, or car chargers to charge your radios.
